# Crewd > Crewd is the package manager for prompt-defined AI agents, specialized skills, and multi-agent squads compiled natively for Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI Codex CLI. Crewd brings the package management workflow (manifest, lockfile, version resolution, immutable semantic versioning) to AI developer tooling. Instead of manually copying prompt files across repositories, developers define and install modular AI teammates with a single command. ## Quick Installation ```bash # macOS / Linux (Homebrew) brew install crewdhq/tap/crewd # Standalone Shell Installer curl -fsSL https://crewd.dev/install.sh | sh # Go Install go install github.com/crewdhq/crewd-cli/cmd/crewd@latest ``` ## Quickstart ```bash # Initialize repo and auto-detect AI hosts crewd init # Inspect a package prompt and dependencies before hiring crewd interview @crewd/code-reviewer # Hire an individual agent crewd hire @crewd/code-reviewer # Hire an entire multi-agent squad crewd hire team @crewd/backend-squad # Inspect active roster crewd roster # Install strictly from lockfile (use in CI/CD) crewd install --frozen # Run diagnostics and verify host adapter synchronization crewd doctor ``` ## Core Documentation - [Getting Started](https://crewd.dev/docs#getting-started): Core concepts, package types (Agent vs. Skill vs. Team), and workspace architecture. - [CLI Reference](https://crewd.dev/docs#cli-reference): Complete reference for `crewd init`, `hire` (`hire team`), `fire`, `promote`, `teach`, `forget`, `install` (`--frozen`), `search`, `interview`, `roster`, and `doctor`. - [MCP Server Guide](https://crewd.dev/docs#mcp-server): Direct integration with Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and Codex CLI via Model Context Protocol (`@crewdhq/crewd-mcp` or `crewd mcp`). - [Host Integrations](https://crewd.dev/docs#host-integrations): Native compilation formats for Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI Codex CLI. - [Package Specifications](https://crewd.dev/docs#package-spec): Schemas for `agent.yaml`, `skill.yaml`, `team.yaml`, and `crewd.json`. ## Model Context Protocol (MCP) Integration Coding agents can search, inspect, and plan package installations directly via the official MCP server: ```json { "mcpServers": { "crewd": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@crewdhq/crewd-mcp"] } } } ``` Exposed MCP tools: 1. `search_packages(query, type?, host?)`: Discover packages in the registry. 2. `inspect_package(name, version?)`: Read-only dossier of prompts, role specs, tools, and script previews. 3. `plan_hire(name, targets?)`: Dry-run calculation of exact target files, SHA-256 hashes, and single-use `confirm_token`. 4. `hire(name, confirm_token, targets?)`: Installs planned package after explicit user confirmation. 5. `check_upgrades()`: Compares `crewd.lock` against registry to report available updates. ## AI Host Compilation Outputs - **Claude Code**: Compiles to `.claude/agents/.md` with frontmatter tools and subagent triggers; extracts skills to `.claude/skills//SKILL.md`. - **Cursor**: Compiles to `.cursor/rules/crewd-.mdc` with glob matching and role descriptions. - **Gemini CLI / Antigravity**: Compiles marker-delimited blocks (``) into `GEMINI.md` or `AGENTS.md`; extracts skills to `.gemini/skills/` or `.agents/skills/`. - **OpenAI Codex CLI**: Compiles into `CODEX.md` or `AGENTS.md`; extracts skills to `.codex/skills//SKILL.md`. ## Security Architecture - **Zero Install-Time Script Execution**: Crewd never executes post-install hooks, shell scripts, or arbitrary lifecycle code during package resolution or extraction. - **Inert File Placement**: Helper scripts (e.g. in `scripts/`) are installed strictly as inert source files and are never executed automatically. - **Pre-Hire Inspection**: Developers inspect package contents using `crewd interview `. In MCP sessions, agents must run `plan_hire` and obtain user confirmation before `hire`. - **Immutable Checksums**: Package archives are content-addressed and pinned by SHA-256 integrity hashes in `crewd.lock`. ## Public Registry API Autonomous agents can query and resolve Crewd registry packages over HTTP: - Search packages: `GET https://crewd.dev/api/v1/search?q={query}` - Package details: `GET https://crewd.dev/api/v1/packages/{namespace}/{name}` - Specific version: `GET https://crewd.dev/api/v1/packages/{namespace}/{name}/{version}` - Dependency resolver: `POST https://crewd.dev/api/v1/resolve` with body `{"packages": [{"name": "@crewd/code-reviewer", "range": "latest"}]}` - Package tarball: `GET https://crewd.dev/api/v1/tarballs/{namespace}/{name}/{version}`
